Portland-based state geology department has new board member

The state Department of Geology and Mineral Industries, headquartered in Portland, has a new board member.

Scott Ashford, dean of Oregon State University’s College of Engineering, has been appointed to serve a four-year term on DOGAMI’s Governing Board by Gov. Kate Brown, the agency announced Oct. 23, 2015.

Ashford’s research has focused on improving public safety and reducing economic losses from earthquakes and coastal hazards, including an emphasis on making the Pacific Northwest’s infrastructure more resilient in the event of a major temblor or tsunami along the region’s Cascadia Subduction Zone.

DOGAMI’s Governing Board sets policy for the agency and oversees its general operations, adopting a strategic plan every six years.
